Protective sports gear is difficult to clean. Their hard bulky components make them impossible to launder normally while the soft components and foam parts require more than a spray of disinfectant cleaner. Disinfectant sprays are meant for cleaning hard surfaces and can't reach deep within the absorbent parts of the equipment. Also, the chemicals left on the equipment can cause skin irritation.
Yet, like any other gym-wear, protective sports equipment should be regularly cleaned and deep cleaning is the way to go. Recent outbreaks of MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus) infections among athletes underline the need to keep this equipment clean.
Simply soak your large bulky equipment in a bathtub or laundry tub with warm to hot water and Sport Clean detergent for about an hour. Some scrubbing may be necessary to remove gross stains. Rinse with cool water and air dry. Smaller items can be cleaned even easier in a dishwasher. Just load items like shin guards, knee pads and elbow pads in the dish rack, add Sport Clean to the detergent dispensers and wash as usual. |
